Podcast: Former FTSE 150 company CEO and International Rally Co-driver – Robbie Philpott (#19)

Robbie Philpott was the CEO of a FTSE 150 company which had close to 17,000 employees. He is also a double Irish Rally Champion Co-Driver who competed professionally throughout the world.

Robbie and I started out as navigators in rally cars at roughly the same time in the late 70s in Northern Ireland. We ended up taking very different paths in life, although both of us have enjoyed ourselves thoroughly over the years.

In this show, Robbie tells us that a lot of the knowledge, skills and attitude he used to build multi-national businesses, were the same as those he used in his co-driving achievements and vice versa.

It’s a fascinating listen and proves that a lot of life’s competencies can be interchangeable.

Enjoy the show.

Podcast: Deputy Editor of UK magazines Auto Express & CarBuyer. (#18)

John McIlroy takes us on a journey from watching motorsport as a boy in Northern Ireland to becoming Editor of some of the biggest motoring magazines in the UK. Along the way, there is some great advice for anyone wanting to follow in his footsteps.

John McIlroy driving me – sorry I couldn’t bring myself to relive this in the show…

John McIlroy knew early on that he wanted to work for the UK’s top weekly motorsport newspaper, Motoring News. He achieved it very early in his career, before becoming Editor of it’s sister publication Autosport, prior to moving on to the more mainstream motoring press.

Later on he became Editor of What Car and is now the Deputy Editor of Auto Express and CarBuyer. His journey is fascinating, as is the advice he offers for anyone wanting to follow in his footsteps.

In addition to the podcast, check out The Stage by Stage Show on YouTube (https://bit.ly/SbSYouTube) for some entertaining chat shows with some rallying legends.

Some action points that you may find useful: –

Thanks to John for all his insights and advice which I hope you found useful. Here are some things you can try: –

  • Never be ashamed to immerse yourself in what interests you. Nerd out if that’s what fulfils you.
  • Make yourself useful. Be willing to do stuff other people don’t want to do.
  • Take setbacks on the chin, and use them as positive things you can learn from.
  • Be prepared to not necessarily earn a fortune. You’re earning money to do something you love.
  • When opportunities arise, stick your hand up for them, don’t wait to be asked. If you’re lucky enough to find a mentor, extract every bit of knowledge you can out of them.
